How to Become Visible
by Shirley Pierce

Most women I know are not skinny, airbrushed and blonde. Most women I know are real women with real bodies. I celebrate them all and love everything about them that makes them special - their laughter or their way with words. Their kindness, their love, their chocolate martinis.

But more than once from this bevy of beauties I have heard varying degrees of the same lament: "When I go into a store, I feel invisible." "When I hit 40, I suddenly felt invisible." "I was at a party and nobody talked to me. I felt so not there."

These women, whose very brilliance lights up every day for me, find themselves "dissed" by the world at large. All I can say is that it's the world's loss.

The first question that comes to mind is "Why must a woman be "picture perfect" to get noticed?" But I want to ask an even better question. "Why is it important to be noticed?"

The answer is pretty obvious. Being noticed means validation. It means that people like you. In other words, being noticed means that you exist.

I have news for you. (Don't I always). You don't have to be noticed to exist. Trust me. If you can read this, you exist. If you woke up, went to work, watched Judge Judy, paid bills, exercised, smiled, shopped or jumped over a candlestick, you exist.

But, the problem is, you want others to know that you exist even though you do not genetically resemble a "Barbie" doll.

You want others to look at you, smile at you, be nice to you, serve you promptly and say "Have a nice day" and mean it.

How? You ask. How can little old you, without money, extensive plastic surgery and your own personal publicist get that all powerful feeling that you can not only become "visible" but shine in the eyes of the world? Read on and I will tell you how. Like they say in the commercials. It's "easy and it's fun".

All you have to do is change one, single, solitary thing. Your attitude. That's all. Just be positive in thought, word and deed. I know what I'm talking about. Why? If the thoughts and ideas that you harbor inside are beautiful, it will permeate every inch of your physical being and no one can resist you.

When I say be positive, I don't mean you have to be a cross between Jimmy Carter and Princess Di. I'm just saying find a positive thought for any situation. Say a positive word. Do positive things. Give up your seat on a bus. Let another car into your lane. Let someone get in front of you in the supermarket. Give a child a smile. Walk tall, look people in the eye and say "hello". Let them know that whenever they meet you, it will be a positive experience.

Write this on your mirror next to your Weight Watcher's affirmation. "By validating others, you validate yourself."

The best thing about it is that you'll do more than "exist" in other people's eyes. You'll be powerful. Here's proof. Think of the truly powerful - the kings, queens, potentates and media moguls of history. I can guarantee you that every one of them would feel powerful if they were alone in the middle of the Sahara desert. They wouldn't be having as much fun without the odd vassal to push around but they would still feel powerful.

Being a positive force is a powerful thing. You'd be surprised how many lives you can change just by being a bright light in somebody's day.

Now you see how you can become a goddess and generate your own personal power in just one easy step. By being a positive force, you will not be "invisible". You will be welcome. And no 38 inch bust is necessary.
